KOYO – La Cucaracha/Mechanical Bull (2024)
Leeds quartet KOYO has once again proven their mettle in the progressive rock scene with their latest double single release, ‘La Cucaracha’ and ‘Mechanical Bull’. The band, known for their dynamic blend of psychedelia and modern rock, were hit hard by the pandemic, with the new releases being their first since their 2020 sophomore album You Said It. This new offering marks a triumphant return, showcasing their evolution while maintaining the gritty, visceral sound that has become their hallmark.
‘La Cucaracha’, the opening track of their upcoming album Onism, bursts forth with an explosive energy that immediately captures the listener’s attention. The song lives up to its name – “The Cockroach” in Spanish – by embodying the resilience and persistence associated with these notoriously hardy insects. Just as a cockroach is known for its ability to endure and survive, this nearly instrumental piece is relentless and refuses to let up. The song’s driving riffs and pulsating rhythms create a sonic landscape that’s both familiar and refreshingly new, perfectly encapsulating KOYO’s progressive psychedelic rock roots while pushing their sound forward.
In contrast, ‘Mechanical Bull’ delves deeper into the band’s lyrical prowess, exploring themes of growing up and shifting priorities. The track’s crunchy riffs and deep bassline, reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers, provide a solid foundation for the song’s introspective lyrics. KOYO’s ability to blend these heavier elements with their signature psychedelic touches results in a progressive rock anthem that feels both nostalgic and contemporary.
Reflecting on ‘Mechanical Bull,’ the band shared, “It’s hard enough keeping your head above water in this life and there’s value in simply staying afloat. On the one hand, you don’t wanna let go of that spark, that boyhood dream and become another cog in the machine but on the other hand if you’re not careful you can fall into the trap of putting all your value in the rockstar dream.” A statement that perfectly encapsulates the song’s exploration of the tension between youthful aspirations and the realities of adulthood.
These two singles serve as a tantalizing preview of KOYO’s third studio album, Onism, set for release in Autumn. If these tracks are any indication, fans can expect an album that captures the raw, unfiltered energy of their debut while showcasing the band’s growth and maturity. KOYO appears to have overcome their post-second album identity crisis, reconnecting with their initial passion and channelling it into what they consider their favourite project to date. As we eagerly await the full album, ‘La Cucaracha’ and ‘Mechanical Bull’ stands as a promising testament to KOYO’s continued evolution and enduring relevance in the progressive rock scene.
