Kongress – Summer Days (2022)

Retro yet modern, ‘Summer Days’ by Kongress invokes those warm days when all you want to do is have some fun. Bringing a splash of 60s vibes to some modern sounds, they weave a rather nostalgic web that you are glad to be caught in. While the single was originally written decades ago, it has been given a new electronic lease on life, complete with a fantastic music video.

Taking over 30 years’ worth of video footage from Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade, Kongress has created a music video that captures the endless summer vibes of the music. The band uses their years of experience to really bring their music to life, having started in 1975, but only really thriving as a project more recently. Bringing the music of the past to a blast of modern vibes, they are definitely a band to look out for.

‘Summer Days’ sweeps you into the swirl of sound from the first second. There is a touch of psychedelia to the warble of the melody that is picked up by the vocals. Through the music, you are filled with the heat of summer days which causes a lethargy to sink into your muscles. It is like all the good things about sunny days have been compressed into the melody, pumped into your veins and allowed to expand throughout your body. While the haze of psychedelia takes over the main lines of the melody, there is a deep and modern beat that brings an almost electronic feeling to the track. The music has been wonderfully crafted to bring retro and modern touches together, while inundating your sense with the feeling of the track.

The haziness of the higher levels in the melody is enhanced by the vocals that have a light echo to them. As the vocals flow out into the soundscape, they leave a trail of vibrating echoes in their wake that continues to draw you into the single. There is a touch of a love song woven into the lyrics as they compare the shine of someone you love to the glory of summer days. Combined with the melody, you feel the urge to close your eyes as you listen to the vocals and sink into the emotions they create. The summer heat rests on your skin, heating your blood while your mind floats on the endless haze of good vibes.

The feeling of the single is brought to visual life by the music video that has been fantastically edited. Using years of footage brings the retro vibes to the single, but there is something rather timeless about the energy of the parade being shown. At times, it feels like the movement of the parade goers is perfectly in time with the movement of the melody. The homemade vibes of the video seem to add a little something to the single that makes it even more enjoyable.

Retro yet modern, ‘Summer Days’ is packed with warmth, chilled touches and a haze of good vibes that has you sinking into the sound of Kongress. Both the melody and vocals have an almost psychedelic edge to them as they draw you into the haze of summer days. The accompanying music video is a stunning amalgamation of years of footage that perfectly captures the feeling of the track.
