Koburg – Beauty In The Fight (2023)

What Evanescence and Halestorm brought as hard-hitting groups, Koburg meets as a one-woman band. Joining the royalty of melodic metal, UK-based Koburg takes her place alongside Amy Lee, Cristina Scabbia, Lzzy Hale and Tarja Turnan. This is my introduction to Koburg but she is already turning heads as a solo artist and session singer/guitarist for musicians across the globe. With two albums under her belt, several singles, and critical acclaim from press on an international scale, she has been described as “a sonic force to be reckoned with…” (Sinusoidal Music) and “…providing only one thing to our ears: some pleasure” (Info Music). The latest addition to Koburg’s discography is the single ‘Beauty In The Fight’.

Following her stripped-back versions of ‘Echoes In The Night’ and ‘Warriors Blood’, Koburg showcases her elegant musicality. As barebones tracks, her skill with various instruments shines through compounded by an intimate vulnerability from her intoxicating vocals. Moving ahead to ‘Beauty In The Fight’, Koburg brings the vulnerability and intense intimacy from ‘Echoes In The Night’ to a harder, heavier rock tune. Recorded with Evan Rodaniche (mixing) and Ted Jensen (mastering), ‘Beauty In The Fight’ is an elegant song with sophisticated production. Yet, while the production is sophisticated, Koburg slathers the melody with raw innocence and aggression bringing grittiness to the sound.

Opening with a soothing, gentle tone, Koburg sets you adrift on a smooth sonic river; however, you can also glance the tumultuous waves beneath the river’s glassy surface. As the guitars crescendo and pounding drums burst through, the river becomes tempestuous and as turbulent as a violent whirlpool.

Rising and falling, ‘Beauty In The Fight’ intoxicates you with its clever arrangement and textures. Interestingly enough, while the melody catapults you with its hard-hitting sound, Koburg’s vocals act as an anchor guiding you through the melodic metal madness – but good madness. Moreover, her vocals add a passionate intensity with their simultaneous vulnerability and strength.

“’Beauty In The Fight’ is a song about love, hate and the struggle to co-exist with the animal inside. Learning to embrace oneself and find beauty within the intricacies of the human mind.” – Koburg on ‘Beauty In The Fight’
