Koalra – In A Weird Way (2025)

Never ones to sit on their laurels and keep the “samesy-samesy” style filter through their music, US-based band Koalra tackle provocative issues with an ever-evolving sound. From the indie-rock sounds of ‘Everything We Had’ to synth-driven post-punk in ‘When The Dust Settles’, and grungy tones in ‘The Clouds Still Hang On You’, the lads shift, wade and saunter across nostalgic rock-slicked sounds. Yet, as much as there is diversity, a sliver of 80s post-punk tends to linger, even if it’s peeping from the background. Join us as we delve into their most recent single, ‘In A Weird Way’.

Following the well-received 2024 album Disasterclass, Koalra showcase another side to its multifaceted personality with ‘In A Weird Way’. Joining the musical talent of Jason Miller, Nico Torres, and Philip Sidener (who happens to have produced ‘In A Weird Way’), the new single drags us back to the days of The Cure and Joy Division with dramatic flair. Yet, as much as I hear hints of old-school post-punk in ‘In A Weird Way’, Koalra offer something… well, obscure, with a harder hit of punk seeming to flutter in the background.

Hazy and ethereal, stepping into ‘In A Weird Way’ is like wandering across a foggy wilderness with fairy lights fluttering in a kaleidoscopic blur. It’s refreshing in a strange way, but the fog could be suffocating, bearing down on your chest while simultaneously lifting you above the darkness of reality. Odd and quite difficult to describe; I guess the best way to understand what I’m talking about is to experience ‘In A Weird Way’ yourself.

At only two-and-a-half minutes (or thereabouts), this track is rather brief and could be forgotten amidst longer songs; however, the unusual, off-kilter fusion of intricate vulnerability and light-hearted joviality makes it rather memorable. Confident and bold, but with fragility and intimacy peeking from the background, the short track is sure to make a great impact. No pun intended, but ‘In A Weird Way’ will have you hooked in a weird way. Highly recommended!
