Koalra – Disasterclass (2023)
Since their formation in 2019, or at least the year when they released their self-titled album, US-based Koalra have dipped, swerved, dived and slipped through various genres. They began with the noise-fest of 90s-inspired grunge grooves before quickly moving along to the new wave realm in 2021 (see our review of ‘Torture’), then leaning toward melancholic psych beats in 2022’s Nihilism and Analog Tape; needless to say, Koalra enjoy experimentation. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the eclectic single ‘Disasterclass’.
Following the 2022 album Nihilism and Analog Tape, including the critically acclaimed track ‘Center of the World’, Koalra marched into 2023 with ‘Disasterclass’. The title track off their upcoming seventh album, the threesome jumps into indie-rock with a resounding splash. Interestingly, while there is a strong leaning toward 90s rock in ‘Disasterclass’, a thread of psychedelic 80s post-punk slivers through the melody.
As I mentioned, Koalra is an experimental band with a desire to reach the next trend before it’s cool and they show this originality in ‘Disasterclass’. The nostalgic whiffs of 90s pop-rock vibrate in a bold bass and drums; however, the misty vocals enhance a synth-inspired wistfulness. Not necessarily a darker sound but definitely more intricate than previous material, ‘Disasterclass’ oscillates between light and dark, grittiness and mellow flow, brash boldness and laidback vibes with a cheeky smile at the end.
Koalra has been described as adventurous, euphoric, vivid and explorative, but these words barely capture their masterful presence. Setting the trend for others to follow, the Portland lads are pioneers in the US (and beyond) rock music scene. I cannot wait for their upcoming EP to drop. Keep an eye on Koalra because, I think, they have far more to offer.
In addition to the single, Koalra released an official music video for ‘Disasterclass’. The video can be viewed below or via their YouTube channel.
