KJ Hand – Lost Souls (2022)
Music has the power to heal, help and build a sense of self-worth without too much effort. Many musicians use their songs as a catharsis to deal with certain situations, and this is the case with KJ Hand. Embracing music as a young child, KJ Hand used music to manage his dyslexia and gain respect and acceptance from his peers. Since those early days, KJ Hand has performed across the globe as a part of the band Yeah Jazz. He smashed the indie charts and even received a four-star review from the acclaimed publication Q Magazine. Now he is pursuing a solo project, and this is what we’re looking at (or rather listening to).
The debut single from KJ Hand, ‘Lost Souls’ is a heartfelt and tender indie-folk meets soft rock track. With a tinge of a traditional Irish sound, there is a soothing charm about KJ Hand; however, the soothing style is quite heart-breaking in its melancholic tone. An acoustic-inspired track, the single touches your soul with a melodic combination of piano, strings and guitar. It is this kind of song that highlights the beauty of organic instrumentation and its evocative nature.
Soft, soothing and gentle, KJ Hand’s rich vocals elegantly accompany the soul-stirring arrangement as he sings about unrequited love. The poetic lyricism delicately traverses the tender content, but there appears to be a warmth in the melancholic ‘Lost Souls’. You can feel the pain and anguish KJ Hand is dealing with, but at the same time, you hear the sincerity and sentimentality of understanding what love is really about. It is this depth and innovation that highlights the profound complexity of the track despite its simplistic approach.
So, what is my opinion of KJ Hand’s ‘Lost Souls’? Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest, ‘Lost Souls’ is one of those songs that have you crying, and you’ll continue to listen over and over again because it is too beautiful.
