Kissing The Flint – Gunslinger Love (2023)

Hailing from Australia but now based in Scotland, Kissing The Flint (also known as Leah Chynoweth-Tidy) curbs her love for steampunk and rockabilly into feisty genre-diverse singles. In 2020 she relocated to the UK garnering a larger following in the Northern Hemisphere, but her sound has been appreciated for several years. Numerous rave reviews, energetic live shows and multi-award nominations prove she is not one to be ignored. In ‘Gunslinger Love’, she shows us why she is receiving such praise.

Capturing the war of the sexes in a vivid sonic painting, Kissing The Flint takes us to the OK Corral for a man-vs-woman showdown. Tipping the scale one step further to add a bit of intrigue to the battle, the fighters try to resist a love-hate attraction; but who will win? Following her 2022 single ‘Dune Girl’, ‘Gunslinger Love’ shifts to vivacious ferocity within a feisty “in your face” tune.

Joined by musicians Laurie Rayment (guitars), Ken Chynoweth-Tidy (bass), Win Liv Shak (Hammond B3) and Louis Parish (drums), ‘Gunslinger Love’ hits the heaviness of hard rock mixed with slivers of blues. From the outset, you are slapped in the face with a fusion of pounding drums and hard-hitting guitars building the foundation for a raging battle. However, just as there is a harmonic blending of the instruments, each of the powerful elements has prominence ensuring you give them full attention – kind of like the fighters in this duel. The crescendo into a scorching guitar solo sweeps you off to a classic rock swirl enhancing the boldness of the song before crashing down into a mire of frenzied sound.

Adding their special touches to a sophisticated production, Dave Beacon of High Lion Studio and Grammy-nominated sound engineer Ben Findlay mix, master and produce the soundtrack to this showdown. An almost palpable swagger exists in the blues-infused tune as we see (or rather hear) each fighter arriving with guns drawn. Emotions run high as the rollercoaster of sound has us imaging the fight from first draw to angry faces, running toward each other but fighting the desire to stop and give that cheeky wink.

So, who wins and who loses? Rambunctious feistiness hides the deeper turmoil of these star-crossed lovers and…well, the raw energy emanating from Chynoweth-Tidy’s vocals might lean toward the fairer sex. Who really knows though? She explains, “Ultimately there must be a winner of the battle, but the track will leave you wondering who will win the war of wills”.
