Kipani – Up For Anything (2021)
Describing themselves on Spotify as “diary pop and sad girl nonsense”, US-based Kipani is a band combining sentimentality, sincerity and brutal honesty in their indie-pop sound. Already a regular feature on The Other Side Reviews, Kipani has graced our ears from ‘Have It All’ to ‘Never Be’ and ‘Mediocracy’ and we love it all! Now, we are not the only ones to be captivated by this trio. Oh no, Kipani has seen their name splattered across notable blogs like Come Here Floyd, Raw Femme, Buzz Music, Turtle Tempo and various radio stations/playlists. The latest offering from this critically acclaimed band is ‘Up For Anything’.
Following the strong pop-influenced ballad ‘Mediocracy’ (read our review here), ‘Up For Anything’ showcases the group’s more upbeat style with a cheerier melodic arrangement. High-paced synths harmonise with pounding drums, dynamic drums and acoustic piano played at a million miles per hour. What I enjoy about ‘Up For Anything’ is the obscurity and uniqueness of the arrangement finding a balance between organic and synthetic instrumentation, as well as bringing a contemporary edge to old-school 80s pop.
While the melody is already overwhelming, but in a good way, Kipani shows they are more than just awesome instrumentalists. Using poetic lyricism, ‘Up For Anything’ explores the negative areas of life but not to depress, rather to empower. The light-hearted vocals ooze positivity with a buoyant, cheery and smile-inducing tone.
Kipani shares that ‘Up For Anything’ is “…about clearing the negative fog and saying yes to enjoying all aspects of life. After facing some hardships, it quickly became clear how precious time is and how much was wasted taking for granted what was right in front of us.” Filled to the brim with happiness and optimism, ‘Up For Anything’ can be considered anthemic ready to bring on the best of life to all listeners.
