Kipani – Messy Room (2023)
From their feature in our Keeping It Real series to singles ‘Mediocracy’ and ‘Up For Anything’, “diary pop” trio Kipani has kept us enthralled with their enchanting music. Hailing from New York, Tiffany, Mike and Sean take original music “straight from Tiffany’s diary to your ears”. While their coverage in various publications (Less Than 1000 Followers, Lost In The Manor, Sonic Breakfast) gives us a hint of their intriguing sound, Kipani has a reputation for high-energy, fast-paced, mind-blowing live shows. Come with us as we delve into Kipani’s world of intimate and evocative sound.
Taken from Kipani’s debut full-length album Spoiled Ingrates, ‘Messy Room’ traipses pop-rock and hard rock with hints of electropop slithering through the melody. Opening with soothing synths and electronic beats, you imagine a song in the line of commercial pop; however, a bold burst of alternative meets hard rock tosses you into a sonic hurricane. Bold guitars meet pounding drums in a ferocious swirl while softer synths slip in bringing a slightly soothing tone. The thing is, just as the instrumentation has you gasping for breath, Tiffany’s powerful vocals smash through enticing you with their vivacity.
From the opening of ‘Messy Room’, I assumed Kipani would lean to a Florence + The Machines sound; how wrong I was. I could refer to ‘Messy Room’ as a more soothing Halestorm with Tiffany tapping into her inner Cristina Scabbbia; then again, it wouldn’t be a fair comparison. With intense intimacy, vulnerability and a breathtaking sophistication showing their musical theatre training, Kipani is quite unique.
As I mentioned ‘Messy Room’ is taken from Kipani’s album Spoiled Ingrates. Separated into two parts, Spoiled Ingrates explores experiences of betrayal, loss, love and life journeys. ‘Messy Room’ falls into Part 1 touching on feelings of anxiety, turmoil and depression, all evident in the song’s vulnerability, complexity and heartfelt despair. Part 2 is the side of healing, but for now ‘Messy Room’ deals with human delicacy and fragility in a hard-hitting rock sound.
