Kingdom Calm – In My Mind (2023)

Draw together the musical stylings of three naturally talented Australian lads and what do you have? Well, truthfully, you have a band, but we’re talking about the indie-rock giants Kingdom Calm. A beautiful culmination of Sydney-based Matt Power (lead vocals and guitar), Sinclair Alexander (vocals and bass) and Andy Smith (drums), Kingdom Calm has been garnering a following with their enthusiastic, energetic and engaging live performances for several years. In fact, a gig review by Happy Mag described them as “infectiously energetic…oozing with utter enjoyment”. While their bold performances are impressive, they are reaching far beyond their Australian borders with coverage from international publications (Sinusoidal Music, It’s All Indie, Music Arena GH) and playlists. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘In My Mind’.

Following their well-received single ‘Relativity’, Kingdom Calm take a trip through the sounds of yesteryear traipsing from 80s indie-rock to 90s pop-rock sounds with ‘In My Mind’. Yet, while there is a nostalgic flair to ‘In My Mind’, Kingdom Calm add a modern-day edginess with bold guitars, pounding drums and Power’s rich vocals. Add the talent of Scott Aplin on the keyboard and you have an outstanding arrangement that both brings you to attention while also setting you adrift on a mellow flow.

While the melody is inspired teetering on the cusp of various genres, it is the lyrical content that brings a deeper meaning to ‘In My Mind’. The band explains that ‘In My Mind’ was “born from a writing weekend we did on a farm belonging to our bassist’s cousin in western New South Wales. We had just watched an old prison movie that night after a full day’s rehearsal and when we woke up the next morning our drummer had come up with some lyrics about being trapped in a prison of the mind thinking about the criminality of regret and doing “too much time” figuring out why life isn’t where you think it should be.” Unfortunately, this regret cycle is something many of us face nowadays and makes the theme highly relatable.

Fresh but familiar, warm but dark, gentle but a slap in the face, Kingdom Calm connect and show their vulnerability and versatility with ‘In My Mind’.
