KinetiX – Off My Head (2021)
Described by RTE’s ‘Behind The Music’ blog as “…in line to become Ireland’s next electropop stars”, it is clear that KinetiX is set for success. Hailing from Offaly, brothers Theodore (vocals), Ademar (keys/synths) and Arthur (drums) blend various influences to create a new breed of pop meet electronica. Already featured on The Other Side Reviews (see our review of ‘White Oil’ here), the Irish trio are on our radar, but that doesn’t mean they are merely another submission. Despite beginning with traditional Irish music, KinetiX has a contemporary electropop sound showcasing eclectism and innovation. The latest addition to the group’s discography is ‘Off My Head’.
Following their ethereal, upbeat single ‘White Oil’, KinetiX bring listeners a hard-hitting tune in ‘Off My Head’. I don’t know if you can call electropop smooth, but the single has a flowing melody with well-placed arrangements. Using their typical synths and pounding drums, the lads introduce piano to add a simplistic charm to the song. Yet, while there is a smoothness to ‘Off My Head’, KinetiX retains an experimental “all over the place-ness”. It is as if you are tipped into a whirlpool of sound with a kaleidoscopic view.
What I find intriguing about KinetiX is not the instrumentation or clever textures lying between pop and dance, but the transition from genres and styles in singles. The traditional training is clear in the sophistication of ‘Off My Head’, but Theodore’s vocals take prominence enhancing a maturity in the song. Calming, tender and soothing, his dulcet tones add warmth to the synth-heavy track.
A conceptual single, ‘Off My Head’ is a song of self-confidence and empowerment. Drummer Arther shares that”…this song is about an undying belief in oneself and what the belief can help you become.” One could argue that there is a strong vulnerability in the personal narrative, but the power of the lyricism and melody exposes an optimistic self-belief. In these uncertain times, it is more important than ever to make things happen and have some faith in humanity. This Irish trio hit the nail on the head with their anthemic ‘Off My Head’.
