Kid Lazarus – Words Are Just Another Way To Hide (2023)

Deep down, the UK-based band Kid Lazarus just want to write songs about sandwiches (or so they say according to their Spotify), but why settle for a ham sandwich when there’s a world of flavour waiting to be discovered? Influenced by the likes of post-punk and electronica, the group offer a captivating blend of ambient hues with hard-hitting guitars and pounding drums to their listeners. In 2021, they released their debut single ‘In Ether’ to critical acclaim and followed it up with the powerful EP Men of God/ Capital. They now slither into our ears once again with the single ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’.

Following Men of God/ Capital, ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’ is the first release from Kid Lazarus in two years. As with previous material, a wistful haziness swirls about the melody. While the melody leans toward traditional post-punk ala Joy Division, slivers of blues and folk slip into the twirl of sound. A piano drives the ballad with powerful folk tones but blues-rock swaggers in with the bold guitars and drums. A hint of old-school classic rock tinges the edges of the melody giving a nostalgic edge to ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’.

Unlike Kid Lazarus’ debut single ‘In Ether’, ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’ incorporate both male and female vocals to the track. A sneaky duet ensues bringing a harmonic tone to the single while oscillating between the higher and lower registers. Hushed and working in sync, the dulcet tones flow atop the moving melody; however, there is a vulnerability lurking beneath sharing a hint of delicate fragility. Interestingly, while the vocals have a sophisticated charm, they also enhance the rawness of ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’.
