Kerry Worton – Break Up Song (2025)
While singer-songwriter Kerry Worton has only two singles streaming on her Spotify, she is by no means a newbie in the industry. No stranger to the studio or stage, the UK-based songstress has worked as a session musician for various artists, has performed her songs far beyond her English borders, featured in international publications, and has been compared to the likes of Sinead O’Connor and Janis Joplin. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Break Up Song’.
Following her critically acclaimed debut single ‘Mother U’, released in 2024, Worton swaggers into the new year with ‘Break Up Song’. Aptly released on Valentine’s Day, this song isn’t a lovey-dovey one, nor is it the tragically sad “cry into your pillow” ballad. Instead, ‘Break Up Song’ is a cheeky snub to that absolute b**tard who broke your heart, and you don’t give a damn anyway.
Flooded with the energy of Janis Joplin, ‘Break Up Song’ is an angsty folk song entwined with modern-day alternative rock and grunge; a song that transcends decades in its obscurity but retains the beauty of powerful music. For me, the instrumentation is intriguing with mellifluous flow along a sinister tread of sound. Yet, it is Worton’s inimitable vocals that up the ante. With soul-stirring swiftness, the rich vocals seem to bind the track flitting between gritty angst and vulnerable fragility.
While the melody is an intoxicating one as Worton ensnares your senses, its weightiness can be heard in the lyricism. Flavoured with dark tragedy, but tipped with an empowering “stuff you, I can do better” attitude, ‘Break Up Song’ is ideal for those who, as Worton puts it, “…dread Valentine’s Day”.
