Kelsie Kimberlin – Perfume (2025)
As the week begins, it’s always nice to start with a pleasant song and what better way than with an artist we’ve come to greatly appreciate – enter Kelsie Kimberlin. With an eagerness to explore every corner of life in its grit and glory, the US-based musician brings vivid, intimate stories to our ears with her poetic lyricism and moving tunes. Alongside her musical talents, Kimberlin is a skilled filmmaker currently creating a movie about Ukrainian resistance and resilience; however, we’re taking a gander at her music. So join us as we delve into the latest single, ‘Perfume’.
Following the well-received singles ‘No More Hellos’ and ‘Lunchtime’, ‘Perfume’ daubs her sonic palette with various shades of pop. Shivers of old-school synth-pop flutter across the melody, while a stronger modern-day pop tone clings to the single. For me, as much as a vintage flavour oozes in the melody, it is Kimberlin’s contemporary vocals that add a refreshing joviality to the track.
Smooth and soothing, ‘Perfume’ takes you on a, well, perfumed haze of music wrapped floating on a kaleidoscopic cloud. Lost in the ethereal pop soundscape, it’s easy to forget all the troubles of the past and merely indulge. Exploring the theme of love with hopeful, optimistic tones, Kelsie Kimberlin explains:
“I have to admit that in high school, I read the book ‘Perfume’ and watched the accompanying film about a young man in Paris who was intoxicated by the smells of perfume worn by the women in the city. This inspired my song, but instead of the dark turn described in the book, my song is uplifting and about how love, like perfume, can be so mysteriously attracting… The right perfume like the right love is so powerful that no words are needed.”
In addition to the single, Kelsie Kimberlin released an official music video for ‘Perfume’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
