Kaylyn Marie – At Work (2021)
With her first single in 6 years, Kaylyn Marie offers a difficult confession with ‘At Work’. The single is the first of five tracks that tell the story of a person leaving an abusive relationship. With this song, she acknowledges that there is a deep caring between the people in an unhealthy relationship. Through this, she calls for this love not to be built on making it harder for a person to leave the relationship.
While this is her first single in 6 years, she has been busy in the music industry over the last 15 years. From receiving a golden ticket on American Idol to being featured in Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Post’, she has been connecting with audiences. Now she is ready to draw us all into a deep story that simply needs to be told.
‘At Work’ has a very delicate opening that makes you feel like you need to whisper if you have to talk at all. While the music has a very light feeling to it, there is a lot of depth and heart to it. You can feel like it is lifting the heaviness of the confession of the lyrics off Marie’s shoulders. While a relatively simple melody, the swell of emotion and the soothing vibe help the delicacy of the lyrics shine. Close to the end of the track, there are these deep heartbeats that come through adding a slightly ominous feeling to the music.
Marie’s vocals are as delicate as the melody as she whispers to you at the start of the track. The folk tones of her voice capture the emotions of the track perfectly while her delivery adds a poignant slice to them. Through her performance, you are filled with all the good times of the relationship and the reasons why the couple loves each other. This is gently tempered with the understanding that this does not change anything and that it would be better to move on.
Kaylyn Marie confesses to the love couples in toxic relationships have for each other while realising that this does not change anything in ‘At Work’. The tenderness and delicacy of the melody bolster her whispered vocals for an intimate remembrance of the good times.
