Katie Keddie – Maybe You Were Right (2022)
First turning people’s heads in 2019 with her debut single ‘Eighteen’, Katie Keddie has been deemed one to watch by various blogs. From Couch Mag to Testicanzoni Rockol and BBC Introducing, Keddie is reaching audiences far beyond the borders of England. With her silky vocals and engaging melodies, UK-based Keddie is becoming known as a singer-songwriter with a mature, sophisticated sound. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Maybe You Were Right’.
On the heels of her critically acclaimed track ‘Comfort and Despair’, ‘Maybe You Were Right’ has a nostalgic whimsy as it leans towards the indie-rock sounds of the 90s. Reminiscent, slightly, of The Cranberries with her hushed vocals and simplistic instrumentation, there is a lingering sonic fog surrounding listeners. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact, you’ll probably enjoy the sonic fog as it engulfs you in its rich, warm embrace.
Initially an acoustic phone recording, ‘Maybe You Were Right’ has a minimalist soundscape; however, there is a kaleidoscopic flow in the melodic arrangement. Fusing together steady drums, soft vocals and a bold lead guitar, ‘Maybe You Were Right’ has swag but with a humble overtone.
As with most of her older material, Katie Keddie inserts a melancholic quality with her poignant lyricism. Carefully and elegantly weaving meaningful content through the harmonic arrangement demonstrates Keddie’s sophistication as an artist. Yet, while a sophistication and maturity exist in ‘Maybe You Were Right’, there is also a youthful naivety and whimsy that makes it raw and brutally honest.
