Katanak – Lights of Toyko (2023)
Finding that delicate line between The Wombats, The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club, Katanak is a burst of indie-pop meets indie-rock in a brightly coloured sonic wrapper. The solo project of Australian singer-songwriter Dylan Cattanach, Katanak has a reputation for engaging and energetic live performances. Fresh off playing at Brisbane Festival 2022, he has captured the hearts of critics, audiences and respectable artists alike. From Happy Mag to Roadie Music, Amazing Radio, Pop Passion Blog, ABC Radio and BBC Introducing Solent, Katanak is garnering a following far beyond his Australian borders.
Following his single ‘Weigh Down’, Katanak blasts into 2023 with the single ‘Lights of Toyko’. While retaining the strong indie-pop flavour, ‘Lights of Tokyo’ appears to show an evolution in his sound since ‘Pinch Grip’ in 2021. While ‘Pinch Up’ was far more pop-punk meets indie-rock and ‘Weigh Down’ far more indie-pop, Katanak fuses the best of these genres in his new song. Fiddling about with genres to find a grey area in the mash of music, Katanak establishes a signature sound with ‘Lights of Toyko’.
Bold guitars meet pounding drums in the upbeat, high-energy, toe-tapping arrangement. Collaborating with talented industry professionals, the self-produced ‘Lights of Toyko’ is a true reflection of various styles and influences from the full team. Recorded and produced with Matt McGuiffe, Jordan Bain and Aidan Hog, it effortlessly twirls you about with the wistful but rich melody.
Just as the harmonic melody entices you to get up and boogie, Katanak’s lyricism makes the single an anthemic love song. Katanak explains that “’Lights of Toyko’ was written after my friend told me the story of meeting someone out one night in Tokyo. I wanted to convey that ‘wow’ moment when you lock eyes with someone and you just click…I wanted to capture the excitement and energy of being in a foreign city, not being able to speak the language, and being swept up in that atmosphere of meeting someone new.”
Vibrant, vivid and enchanting, Katanak’s ‘Lights of Toyko’ captures the heart-pounding, soul-stirring, breath-taking feeling of true attraction (possibly love) at first sight.
