Karmacoda – You And I (2024)
Inspired by humanity in its totality, US-based Karmacoda tackle existential chaos, transformation and self-identity through a unique blend of rock, pop, RnB and electronica. While this is my introduction to Karmacoda, the trio has been pushing the borders of conventionalism for over two decades. Drawing together the musical stylings of Jessica Ford (vocals), Brett Crockett (vocals and production) and multi-instrumentalist Eric Matsuno (bass and unique elements), Karmacoda captures dark emotions, lived experiences and life in all its grandeur in an ever-evolving swirl of music. The latest addition to their discography is the album You And I.
Following the well-received single ‘Dreaming’, a track from the new album, You And I is a concoction of styles and sounds. Yes, there is a certain thread of soulful pop and RnB fluttering throughout the album; however, each track glints at something new, a new hint of colour grasping at the constant thread. ‘Swimming’ hits with a strong pop tone, while ‘Let Me Go’ shines with soul, ‘Jewel’ clasps to an eclectic dream-pop meets jazz blend, and the title track’s brush of RnB.
One aspect I find intriguing about Karmacoda and You And I is how they capture the styles of different eras. Breathing life into 80s soul with hits of 90s pop and RnB, then the contemporary rush of modern-day pop, this album has something for everyone. For me, a hint of 90s Gloria Estefan melds with the sensuality of 80s Sade, but with the clip of 21st century soothing in the lines of Adele. The thing is, while this is my opinion, it is unfair to compare Karmacoda to any established (or upcoming) artist as their sound is unique.
Listening to any music from Karmacoda is an immersive experience. Set adrift on a glistening sonic river, You And I is a warm, colourful flow of music beginning with the opening ‘Try At Me’. Soft, smooth, gentle and tender, your boat floats on the ripples of music; however, the tumultuous waves can be seen beneath. Bobbing about on a dark sonic river, you feel comfortable nestling in soulful jazz, warm RnB and charming pop. Yet belying this cinematic sensation is a slight hint of chaos lurking beneath the water.
Blending bold bass with percussion, synths, guitars and drums, You And I is a harmonic symphony of sound, but the vocals add another dimension to the tunes. Leading the tracks with confidence, Jessica Ford’s unique voice is a friend holding your hand; then again, haunting and vulnerability ooze from her dulcet tones. Oscillating from confident power to subdued fragility, the album is a representation of life in its totality.
