KARMA – The Mistletoe (2024)

If Destiny’s Child merged with TLC, the chances are KARMA would be the overall result. Now, if you take a gander at various reviews – including our review of ‘SIS (She’s Something)” – allusions to 90s girl groups are made; however, US-based trio KARMA brings a sprightly punch to old-school sounds with true female empowerment. Not necessarily associating with a particular genre, KARMA is a brand of this, that and the other thing, insisting they are not to be pigeon-holed. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Mistletoe’.

Following the well-received single ‘SIS (She’s Something)’, KB, Keymah Renee and Miesha MonRoe celebrate the Christmas season in a soft RnB tone sliced by hints of 90s pop. Taken from the three-track EP Karma Under The Mistletoe, ‘The Mistletoe’ soothes your soul and brings a smile to your face; however, there is a fairy-like delicacy peeking between the powerful music. Produced with Arthur Levy and Temmora Williams-Levy, the bold beats sparkle with kaleidoscopic innocence alongside the mature sophistication of the track.

Despite not being the greatest fan of holiday songs, I have to admit Christmas always feels a little happier and lighter with heart-warming melodies. For me, my absolute favourite Christmas song remains Mariah Carey’s cover of Vince Vance & The Valiants’ ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. A beautiful cover of the country novelty track; however, KARMA added an RnB hit to Christmas pushing that song to the side with an infectious grin.

“This song is about celebrating love and togetherness during the holidays… Whether it’s catching someone under the mistletoe or just being surrounded by the people who matter most, we wanted to create something that feels magical and brings people together.” – KARMA on ‘The Mistletoe’

Christmas is a magical period, yet we remain aware of the challenges people face during this time. It might not be the perfect gift, but KARMA lightens the load on listeners’ hearts for a few minutes with ‘The Mistletoe’. It might not change the world; then again, we all need happiness even if it’s only a few minutes of joy. KARMA brings this happiness.
