KANE – Guilty (2020)

Hailing from Leicester, UK, Kane Cooper is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter with bold, emotional vocals. After returning from Australia, Cooper had a plan to travel but that, unfortunately, was put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions. Instead of sitting at home sulking, this Leicester lad took advantage of the time on his hands and started recording original material as KANE. He released his debut track ‘Guilty’ last month.

Reminiscent of Shawn Mendes and Sam Fender, ‘Guilty’ is melodic, moving and captivating. As with most pop songs, the track is about a toxic relationship and, according to KANE, “the classic feeling of being messed about.” Thing is, ‘Guilty’ seems to be more enigmatic than anything Fender or Mendes have produced. Cooper brings in an element of rock ‘n’ roll to the commercial pop sound making it gritty, bluesy and distinctive.

An immediate reminder of Charlie Puth’s ‘Attention’, ‘Guilty’ is upbeat but with some emotional depth. Lyrically, the concept of being “messed about” is easily defined; however, it is the sonic build up in the track that really emphasises what ‘Guilty’ is all about. Moreover, KANE’s unique, bold and effortless vocals ooze raw honesty, sincerity and, to a degree, desperation. Charming and compelling, KANE has bewitched me with ‘Guilty’ and I can’t wait to see what else he has up his sleeve.
