Kanda – Unanswered Questions (2024)
Despite being only 19 years old, singer-songwriter Kanda has been playing music for over a decade. Embracing his passion for music at a young age, the UK-based musician began performing at age 8 beginning with cover songs; at age 14, he started composing original material using his storytelling skills to weave sonic tapestries. Skip ahead a few years and Kanda is establishing himself as a pioneer in the UK independent music scene.
From regular features on BBC Radio to Amazing Radio, performances at Godiva Festival and Campers Calling Festival, and collaboration with notable artists like Panjabi MC, Kanda is set for success. Described by curators as delightful, expressive and meaningful, Kanda has turned heads across the globe from France and Portugal to Ireland, the USA and the UK. He turns our head today with his latest single ‘Unanswered Questions’.
Following his well-received single ‘Let Go’, Kanda enters 2024 with the ‘Unanswered Questions’. Backed by bold beats with striking synths, Kanda’s new single easily falls alongside artists like Rag ‘n’ Bone with a hint of Bruno Mars clinging to the tune. The thing is, while the pop arrangement is moving with its electropop drive, the single retains Kanda’s obscure and inimitable style – his voice being the notable factor.
Adopting what I would deem a “bipolar sound”, the vocals in ‘Unanswered Questions’ lead you to believe it is a collaboration of artists; however, this is not the case. Similar to artists who incorporate a falsetto to be followed by a tenor, Kanda flits from guttural choruses in a signature gravelly voice to a softer pop tone with smoother, gentler intonations. The arrangement is engaging and heart-warming, but it is the off-kilter vocals that align with the theme and bring intricacy to a complex song.
Touching on the profound theme of lost romance, isolation and solitary angst, emotional vulnerability is beautifully expressed in the diverse voice. It is a lamentation of “a former lover whose absence leaves him wanting nothing more than a regressing into the past”; a song that will resonate with anyone who faces lost love.
In addition to the single, Kanda released an official music video for ‘Unanswered Questions’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
