Kaiyra – Don’t Forget About It (2022)
With her second single, Kaiyra is moving away from the dance sound that filled her last release with euphoric energy. ‘Don’t Forget About It’ uses a slower pace to bring a soulful blend of contemporary pop and blues that reflect on relationships and the different expectations they come with. Opening her heart through the lyrics, she offers some insight into wavering emotions while working through various thoughts.
While slower than her last offering, there is a passion to the single that offers a sense of catharsis as you realise the dream of a relationship might not be reality. Co-produced and self-released on her own label Kaiyra Music, the single draws on skills she has honed from an early age. She first released a single at age 14 and has been honing both her vocal and production skills ever since.
‘Don’t Forget About It’ brings a soulful vibe to the soundscape from the first notes of the opening. There is a swirl of contemporary pop tones that flow into a bed of bluesy soul. Through the melody, you are drawn into the soulful slide of the single, but there is something quite unique to the movement. It is like the wavering emotions of the lyrics have been turned into sound and created an undulating bed for the vocals to rest on. Across the verses, there are moments when the melody drops to just the beat, allowing the vocals to really shine and build as you head toward the chorus. The twilight feeling of the higher levels of the melody is wonderful as they twirl above the darkness of the lower levels. At times, the melody is stripped back before it turns into a rich soul-pop flow that edges into contemporary RnB territory.
From the slide of the opening, Kaiyra’s vocals slowly build a questioning of emotions and relationships. There is a rich poetry to the lyrics that beautifully brings a churning of emotions and uncertainty to life. You are hit with the expectations that you enter a relationship with, only to feel the tug of the reality of the situation hitting home. The dream of what could be slowly bleeds into the heartache of what is really happening. While there is a touch of pain to the performance, her performance builds a feeling of strength in spite of a lack of reciprocated affection. It is a really powerful performance that is full of passion and hits really hard as you ride the flow of the lyrics.
