Kacey Who – Wish (2021)

There are times when we wish we could go back in time and revisit moments to potentially change them for the better. This forms the foundation of the aptly titled single ‘Wish’ by Kacey Who. While touching on this, it looks at a past relationship that didn’t go as well as it could and the impact this had on Who’s mental health and personal life.

With a style that dips more into contemporary pop, Who offers a free-flowing and easy to listen to soundscape. While this is a slight change to his usual style, it continues his blending of RnB, trap and electronica. As he constantly evolves, his music follows his experiences and touches on aspects of life that we all relate to.

‘Wish’ has a seductive RnB flow to the melody that melds with an alternative pop sensibility. The deep beats are all contemporary RnB but there is this touch of trap woven into the soundscape. The arrangement of the melody brings a dreaminess to your brain like a swirling of misty lights. There is a simplicity to the melody that helps you float in the soundscape while the beats grab your attention.

The lyrics and Who’s vocals are what really get you hooked to the single. His voice is whispery and rich as he lets you see his thoughts laid out in the lyrics. There is a pleading sense to his delivery at times when he wishes for things to have gone differently in a relationship. This turns into a tired understanding that this is impossible. All of this comes together for a single that is deeper than you imagine on first listen.

Kacey Who wraps you in the misty colours of ‘Wish’ while the vocals move from pleading to tired all with a whispering hook. There is a simplicity to the melody that creates an interesting depth to the soundscape. His vocals are emotive as they fill you with the wish to go back in time and change things for the better.
