K I T C H E N – apocroniCis (2020)

K I T C H E N uses his second EP apocroniCis to explore a range of different themes and topics while dipping into personal experiences. Using his lo-fi sound, he considers the evolution of language, the power of the subconscious and the impact of cinema on life. While the tracks were written over the last four years, they have been moulded into a cohesive story of his thoughts, feelings and how they have evolved over time.

Jack Patrick Rudden, the man behind the music, continues to use a minimal recording setup for this EP. The dreamy and intimate atmosphere that was felt through his debut in 2019 seeps into this new EP. Distortions, warping tones and hazy atmosphere all come together to form a wonderful explorative soundscape that has you relaxing while enjoying the journey presented.

‘shittySugar’ drones the EP to life before a thrumming guitar line vibrates through your chest. The hazy drone resting over the single adds to the DIY feeling of the track and fuses with the other instrumentation for an interesting melodic flow. Rudden’s vocals have a slight distortion to them as he pulls you into the lower levels of the track. The depth of his performance makes the song feel intimate like he is sharing something with you that is for you alone.

The haziness of the opening track is thrown out the window for ‘steePin’. The paced melody gets your heart pumping and makes you want to move to the music. There are these wonderful pulses in the melody that puts a smile on your face while getting you pumped up. While the general haziness of the opening track is gone, there is a little that remains over the vocals. The increased tempo does not reduce the intimacy of the vocals. There is an almost futuristic feeling to this song as it pulses its way across the soundscape.

‘theFishReturns’ has a rather surf groovy vibe resting in the melody. The vocals are completely different from the two tracks that came before. There is a more electronic feel to them mixed with a hint of psychedelia. This is possibly the most interesting track on the EP as it is so different to anything else you find on the airwaves right now. You can get lost in the easy surf vibes only to be drawn down by the deeper vocals.

The title track ‘aprocroniCis’ lightly twinkles across your ears for a soft experience. The plucked tones sparkle around your head while the beats are a calming heartbeat. This is a very relaxed track, but the lyrics are much deeper and worth a listen. The soothing flows of the music help you breathe easily while leading you along a path of fairy lights toward understanding. Rudden’s vocals are perfect on the track as he pulls you down the path of the song.

‘walkingTremors’ brings the EP to a close with a crash of lo-fi punk rock. The guitars crash through your chest while the vocals hit with a perfect punk edge. The combination of lo-fi tones and punk rock is really interesting and somehow works well. Instead of the hard edges of punk packed with aggression, it is softened by the distortion of the lo-fi vibes. While softened, the propulsion of the music is not lost only hitting in a different yet effective way.

K I T C H E N uses a lo-fi vibe to bring explorations of language, the subconscious and cinema to life with his EP apocroniCis. The haziness of the lo-fi vibes creates an intimacy through all the tracks that blends with the different musical styles touched on. With some tracks being relaxing and others getting your heart pumping, this is an EP with a little something for everyone.
