Jxckson – Save Yourself (2023)
Driven by originality, self-expression and an empowering sense of individuality, singer-songwriter Jxckson pushes boundaries with an eclectic style. Challenging the norms of society and sound, the US-based artist tosses various flavours of pop in his melodies. This is my introduction to Jxckson; however, he has been turning heads since his debut release ‘Icarus’ in 2019. Described as mesmerising, profound and powerfully unapologetic, Jxckson reaches audiences far beyond his US borders with coverage on global publications, radio stations and playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Save Yourself’.
Following his well-received single ‘Null & Void’, ‘Save Yourself’ boasts Jxckson’s eclectic obscurity in a hard-hitting alternative pop-inspired form of avant-garde music. Recorded with producer Boy Sim, ‘Save Yourself’ is the indescribable theme song for self-expression and originality. Not only do the lyrics push the need for individuality as he tells us to “save yourself”, the melody challenges audiences with its off-kilter design.
Unlike mere melodies you listen to and forget, ‘Save Yourself’ is an experience; a living entity, if you will. Driven by bold beats, the electronic bass pulsates through similar to a racing heart. Distorted keys flit in below the catchy chorus like a thought lost in your memory, but it is the ethereal violin that captures the emotional harmony of the thoughts with mystical flutters. Jxckson’s hushed vocals flow mellifluously as the “angel on your shoulder” navigates a tumultuous swirl of music, as well as binding the insanity with a rich ribbon.
Lying within the realm of avant-garde burlesque in a dramatic cacophony, ‘Save Yourself’ is all about protecting yourself and ignoring societal stereotypes. It “invites listeners to forget societal expectations and prioritise their own well-being” – the unapologetic empowering swoosh of telling society to get lost, be gone and embrace the warmth of self-expression.
