JUNK – We call it JUNK (2023)

Following their soulful hip hop-inspired single ‘Squakin’ like a Bird’, JUNK takes a gander at the significant issue of labelling music in their new song ‘We call it JUNK’. Considering the diversity of music nowadays and the continuously growing section of sub-genres, it is near impossible to categorise. Labels are a reference but is that a true representation of the artist’s artistic vision? Um, maybe…not really. I’m really not sure.

When speaking about their new song, JUNK explains: “The song addresses all the armchair critics from the peanut gallery who compliment the music but won’t play it on their playlist or radio station…” – sad to say, that’s a common issue. The lads further share: “As artists on the rise, we are constantly submitting ourselves to critics and curators to further our music… we say embrace review and knowledge and be your critic and your own greatest fan but never listen to the haters. This is a song of freedom, expression, forward movement, the love of life and the creation of new unique musical fusions…”

Alright, this might be a bit cheeky and scandalous (in fact, I might get into trouble), but I have to agree with JUNK. Critics and curators could lead you to a well-received next album, airtime on international radio, and perhaps a support slot on some international tour with a massive name; the thing is, we’re everything and nothing in the long run. A new fan is significant, a new sound is significant, so I fully agree with JUNK when they tell us to indulge the reviewers but be your own fan.

So, the inspiration for ‘We call it JUNK’ is clear but what about the melody? A soulful stream of music sets the listeners on a sonic river with a grin on their faces. Dubl A lays hip hop vocals with a pulsating beat piercing the tune while soothing vocals lilt in the background bringing jazzy smoothness. Funky vibes hit our ears as a saxophone slithers through with sensual sophistication. The one element that I find most interesting is the classical influence with orchestral horns lurking in the kaleidoscopic water.

Vibrant, vivacious, indescribable, inimitable, insatiable, and a little crazy, JUNK introduces us to the “JUNK genre” in ‘We call it JUNK’.
