JUNK – They Call Me Old Man (2023)

You know those bands that stick in your head and you can’t forget, sort of like a wad of bubble-gum underneath your shoe? Well, JUNK is one of those bands for me. Formed in 2020 during the pandemic, Aaron “Dubl A” Seener and Dale “Dirty D” Pearson came together to create a larger-than-life, one-of-a-kind musical project. Soaring saxophones blend with a powerful bass in the jazz meets blues meets funk meets hip-hop meets…well, pretty much anything you can think of. The latest addition to JUNK’s repertoire is the single ‘They Call Me Old Man’.

From Sinusoidal Music to Find No Enemy, Less Than 1000 Followers and Music Arena GH, a consensus has been reached that JUNK is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Following their debut EP, Chromatose, the pair bring out all the stops in ‘They Call Me Old Man’. The first single with full lyrics, ‘They Call Me Old Man’ is a bass-heavy melody with a strong hip-hop influence. Yet, while the song runs back to the 90s hip-hop scene with “in your face” rapping, a smooth saxophone lurks in the back bringing an old-school funkiness to our speakers.

A fan from the first time I heard JUNK’s music, ‘They Call Me An Old Man’ adds another JUNK show-stopper to the list. What I find intriguing is how the instrumentation has a cheekiness with a sexy vibe from the saxophone and bass, but there is simultaneously aggression and angst. Touching on the topic of ageism, or rather a response to an ageist comment made to one of the band members, JUNK explains that we should not “…judge a book by its cover, don’t always believe what you see. But what is old anyway? What age is that?” Exuding a swagger that only comes with experience, JUNK proves people can be like a fine wine – it only improves with age.
