JULY – Pokey Lights (2022)
Influenced by artists like Phil Collins and Lionel Richie to P Diddy and Tyrese Gibson, singer-songwriter JULY incorporates a plethora of styles into his unique music. From his debut single ‘Mood’ in 2017 to the latest track ‘Pokey Lights’, the UK-based artist is melodic, dynamic, charming and captivating. In fact, over the past few years, he has captured the hearts of many critics across the globe featuring on Divine Magazine, Sinusoidal Music, Illustrate Magazine, Info Music and many more. Come with us as we delve into his new single ‘Pokey Lights’.
Following the well-received tracks ‘Flatline’ and ‘Thrilled’, JULY blends elements of contemporary pop and hip hop with a flowing RnB sound woven into the melodic ‘Pokey Lights’. While I could compare JULY to artists like Charlie Puth or Troye Sivan, there is a sophistication in his arrangement and execution that sets him apart. The richness of his vocals wraps a warm blanket about you while the instrumentation has a bolder tone. Strong beats insert a sense of authority, but the whimsical layering also makes ‘Pokey Lights’ quite dreamy.
Noted by Unrestricted Radio as an artist that “…breaks through the conventional mold…”, I can effortlessly describe JULY as being inimitable. While the melody can hold its own, this musician adds further delicacy to ‘Pokey Lights’ with poetic lyricism offering a calming, charming song. This is my introduction to JULY, but I can easily say he has turned my head and I cannot wait for more. My one complaint about ‘Pokey Lights’ is that it ended too soon.
