July – Medicated (2023)

Since the release of his well-received debut ‘Mood’ in 2017, UK-based July is at the forefront of a revolution in contemporary R&B. Inspired by iconic musicians P Diddy, Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Linkin Park and 50 Cent, the London-based vocalist and songwriter melds various genres to create a sound that is new, innovative and uniquely expressive. Already hitting our virtual desk last year with ‘Pokey Lights’, The Other Side Reviews is no stranger to July and he constantly astounds us with his creativity. Come with us as we dip into his latest release ‘Medicated’.

Following his well-received singles ‘Pokey Lights’ and ‘Circus’, July shifts to a soothing, gentle and mellifluous flood of R&B with ‘Medicated’. Removing the upbeat danceable frenzy of previous releases, the smooth melody in ‘Medicated’ brings a soft simplicity to the soul. July shares that this single “…shows you don’t need to overcomplicate things and a great song can start from a refreshingly simple melody…all the rest is ornamental, but the core of a truly memorable track is there…”

Despite being casual in its presentation there is a kaleidoscopic nature to ‘Medicated’. No bounce or joviality exists but a vibrancy is felt in the mellow flow. July’s bold vocals bring a hint of warm soul to the R&B single, however, a pop-inspired haunting can be felt in the track.

Sincerity, honesty and authenticity are the name of the game with July, and I can’t wait for more from this talented musician.

In addition to the single, July released an official music video for ‘Medicated’. This music video can be viewed below or on his YouTube channel. Please note: this video contains lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
