Julie Title – Heat Wave (2021)

Influenced by the likes of Fiona Apple, Mazzy Star and Aimee Mann, Julie Title has an intimate and intriguing sound. Based in Canada, Toronto to be exact, the talented singer-songwriter merges elements of old-school folk and contemporary pop. Title began releasing original singles in 2019 (or so her Spotify indicates) and continues to reach audiences with her unique style. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Heat Wave’.

Described by Nashville’s Music Mecca as “lucid and poetic…”, Title certainly has a creative streak that she elegantly represents in her music. Following her previous single ‘After The Sun’, ‘Heat Wave’ adopts a “folkier” sound with a strong likeness to Fiona Apple. Her melodic vocals complement the simplistic guitars and drums (courtesy of Lewis Spring) showing you don’t need bells and whistles to be superb.

Smooth and steady, ‘Heat Wave’ has a charming melody resulting in a languid, cinematic ambience. Yet, while the track appears soothing, the lyricism showcases originality and depth. The personal narrative increases her intimate connection with listeners, but the need to “…get my mind off things” exposes her vulnerability. Touching on human fragility in a poetic way, Title walks the delicate line between innocent naivety and mature concern.

So, what is my final verdict regarding ‘Heat Wave’? Enigmatic, hypnotic and intense, Julie Title is able to carry you off on a cloud while exploring the grittier side of relationships. It’s a “feel song” – you need to feel it to experience the full magnitude of her beauty.

In addition to her single, Julie Title released an official music video for ‘Heat Wave’. I was unable to view the video in its entirety because of the lighting effects, but I gathered that it is a visual representation of “riding a bike during a heatwave”. Note: this video uses lighting effects and rapid image transitions that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
