Julia Klot – Boxing Gloves (2023)

Soulful, captivating, engaging and intoxicating, Julia Klot has been surrounded by music since age 6. Beginning as a post-toddler but not over 10 just yet, Klot was surrounded by teachers who supported and encouraged her to take that step as a singer-songwriter.  Now, she is performing at notable music venues like Rockwood Music Hall, releasing critically acclaimed material and turning heads internationally. Featured on Mind Over Matter, Buzz Music, Clout, Os Garotos De Liverpool and various playlists, Klot has been described as cinematic and vibrant. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Boxing Gloves’.

Following her 2021 EP Ghost, ‘Boxing Gloves’ is not only Klot’s first release in 2023 but her first in two years. Showing an evolution in her music, ‘Boxing Gloves’ weaves the best of funk, pop and soul in a four-minute melody. Retaining her inspired piano foundation, the melodic arrangement harmonises a soothing piano with hard-hitting horns and guitars. Interestingly enough, while there is a contemporary tone to ‘Boxing Gloves’, an old-school funk-rock vibe oozes from the song.

One aspect I find interesting about Julia Klot is how she traipses genres with ease. Not only that but how she elegantly moves from genres, styles and tones within a single song. In ‘Boxing Gloves’, we hear the boldness of horns and drums from the get-go but there is a dip offering a softer, gentler piano solo before tossing you forward with the bold horns once again.

Just as the melody is toe-tapping and enthusiastic, I find the juxtaposition between an upbeat tune and poignant lyricism interesting. Touching on “a friendship gone sour – one that started out as loving and caring but somehow turned cold and competitive”. The thing is, while there is vulnerability and desperation in the song, ‘Boxing Gloves’ has an empowering and insightful message to share – “she won’t take the push and shove any more which leads her to the ultimate realisation that when push comes to shove, letting go is the best answer.”
