Jules & The Howl – Bow Down (2024)

For almost a decade, US-based Jules has been entertaining audiences with her confident stage presence and intriguing melodies. 2015 brought us Julianne Q – the pop-rock solo project of Jules; skipping ahead some years, she has traipsed across various genres, styles, and sounds and now we have the intoxicating rocker Jules & The Howl. Inspired by the likes of Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Freddie Mercury, the Chicago native entwines the raw power of yesteryear’s blues-rock world with a modern-day rock twirl. Jules explains that she wants people to “experience the Howl… to be part of a tribe where I hope you can feel loved and accepted… A unified… sense of freedom…” – all embodied in an intimate resonation of raw emotion laced with true individuality. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Bow Down’.

Following her well-received singles ‘Love’ and ‘I Just Wanna Feel Better’, ‘Bow Down’ retains the gruffness of Jules & The Howl’s signature classic rock grit but with a pop-rock bounciness slathered across the melody. Recorded with producer Rev. Tom Chandler, the crashing drums, soaring guitars and shimmering keyboards rush forward in a kaleidoscopic wave of music.

Much of Jules & The Howl’s music indeed leans toward the 60s/70s sounds, particularly the scorching classic rock guitars in ‘Bow Down’; then again, a hit of contemporary pop-rock/pop-punk slices through the track crossing generations, eras and comfortably cradling audiences of all ages.

An established name in the LA rock scene, Jules embodies both a powerful rock artist and an advocate for female performers founding the popular Woman Rock LA show. In ‘Bow Down’, she – and this may just be my opinion – tosses herself into the track allowing us to see the rawness of Jules in all her enigmatic glory. An exploration of humanity in all its grit and glory, ‘Bow Down’ captures intimate sincerity while simultaneously sharing a message of empowerment and strength refusing to step down.
