Judy Malka – Someone Like You (2023)

Inserting classical sentimentality into modern-day music, singer-songwriter Judy Malka touches all bases with her unique musical style. Beginning as one of the first Israeli children to perform in Jesus Christ Superstar, her love for the stage started at a young age. Embracing her natural talent as an artist, Malka spent years studying at renowned performing arts institutions like The Actors Studio and Julliard – all leading to prolific casting such as the Metropolitan Opera’s production of La Boheme. If you haven’t seen her on stage, you might recognise the name from productions such as Orange Is The New Black, The Punisher and Gotham.

An almost infinite melting pot of influences, Malka draws inspiration from Elton John, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Carole King, Edith Piaf, Sarah Brightman and the world of Mozart. In fact, you can hear the intimacy of Carole King flowing through an almost Wilson Phillips sound when listening to Judy Malka. Yet, while comparisons can be made, there is an originality to Malka’s music setting her among iconic artists like Carole King. Perhaps it is her classical training melded into a folk-pop tone placing Malka at the forefront of this tender, toe-tapping but sophisticated sound.

Recorded and produced with Mike Abiuso at Behind The Curtains Media, ‘Someone Like You’ has a soothing flow to the beautifully textured arrangement. Smooth, tender, gentle and laidback, Malka sets your soul adrift on this new single. It is as if the melody creates a hazy sonic cloud with Judy Malka’s vocals harmonically traipsing across the instrumentation. All in all, it’s uplifting, heartfelt and perfect to place you on a happier footing in any difficult situation.

Penned two years ago when Malka was experiencing the effects of the pandemic, ‘Someone Like You’ is an intimate connection with audiences. In an interview with Illustrate Magazine, Malka shared that “the key element for me is evoking emotions…to create a relationship with my listeners…if it resonates with you that’s the power, that’s how you’re being remembered” – this is so elegantly expressed in ‘Someone Like You’.

“One morning I was so depressed with how heavy the news of the world was, how the world was shut down. A voice inside me told me to start writing. I didn’t know what the subject matter would be…I feel that this song is not about a specific person, I just wanted to write a song that was going to be inspiring to a lot of people to help everyone going through this time. All of us have been in that place where we have looked for that somebody to be ‘the one’ and that was the intention of the song…” – Judy Malka on ‘Someone Like You’
