Judy Granville – Hide Away (2020)
Current events have inspired a lot of musicians to express their feelings about lockdown through their music. However, there are few that resonate in the same way as Judy Granville’s ‘Hide Away’. The single looks at the retreat of people into their homes as COVID-19 hit and the shared experience this has evoked across the world. Touching on heartache, anxiety and hope for the future, the single is a gentle anthem of its time.
This single continues the interesting musical journey of Granville herself. After moving to Brighton from London a few years ago, she became inspired to make music and took up guitar lessons. Now a prolific singer-songwriter, she has released an EP with another on the way later this year.
‘Hide Away’ opens with a deep beat and these guitar notes that float against your ears. You are then introduced to Granville’s vocals which has this great 60s and 70s vibe to them. She captivates you with her performance as she details the feelings we all went through during lockdown. The lyrics of the single are extremely relatable which makes it so easy to connect with the message and emotions of the song.
While the vocals and lyrics are relatable, the melody has this feeling that wraps around you. The guitar notes flit in and out changing from light to deep which is wonderful. There is a short guitar riff that has an amazing depth that runs through your chest.
The accompanying music video perfectly captures the emotions of the single. The vibe of the track is set to urban confinement and finally freedom in the rolling hills. While relatively simplistic, the video embodies everything the single is trying to tell you.
The global journey through the pandemic is skilfully laid out by Judy Granville in her single ‘Hide Away’. She uses light folk tones with 60s and 70s vibes to work through the isolation, fear and hope we have all been through. While personal, the song is easy to relate to and a gentle anthem for all of us.

Thanks so much for the review, Claudia. Judy
A great review of my mate Jude’s song. I have watched her develop over the last few years and it’s been a beautiful thing to witness. Her self penned song ‘Nisreen’ about a Palestinian farmer who has had her farm concreted over has moved me to tears. Written after a visit there, it is very real. I look forward to hearing what comes next.
