JUDY – Don’t / Unbothered (2020)

JUDY is taking us on a journey of emotional investment and the realisation of self-worth in her dual single release Don’t / Unbothered. Starting the journey, she takes listeners through the fear of being blindsided after investing emotionally in a person or situation. As she works through the potential hurt, she takes a turn to self-worth and feeling your own energy.

Using a strong presence and contemporary RnB sound, JUDY pushes a message of empowerment for herself and others. While she started her music career uploading covers on social media, she has pursued other creative avenues including photography and videography. However, her passion remained music and she has recently started releasing her original work.

The first single ‘Don’t’ considers caring about someone to the point of vulnerability and the fear of getting hurt because of this. The vulnerability of the single is brought to the fore from the first moment with a light melody. JUDY’s vocals softly rise from the depths of the melody while soulful beats shuffle across the soundscape. There is a smooth flow to the music that fuses with her vocals for a deeply coloured movement. There are ethereal vocals lines that send shivers down your spine before you are drawn into more RnB tones.

‘Unbothered’ has a more sombre opening that offers a sultry flow. The energy of this single is very different as she infuses a sense of apathy into the vocals. Through the lyrics, you are pulled into a realisation of self-worth and the idea that your own energy is more important than what others have to say. The sultry RnB flow of the music is softly empowering. By the end of this track, you will feel like you can shrug off what others think and know that your opinion is what really matters.

JUDY has you feeling vulnerable before finding your self-worth in the dual single release Don’t / Unbothered. There is a wonderful deep flow to her vocals that are reminiscent of Sade, but offer a contemporary feeling that slides down your spine. The two tracks have very different vibes, but work off each other to create a moving journey of empowerment.
