Joyce Martens – Perfect (2023)

The saying is that wisdom comes with age. Learning from mistakes, finding ourselves and making healthier choices are all life lessons that, as it goes, show wisdom comes with age. In my opinion, you can be wiser but also a little crazier and childish as you realise no one gives a damn what you do or say. Perfectionism is pointless so live for the present – this is what Joyce Martens knows and the message she wants to share.

Hitting all those “I should have this by now” stages, Dutch singer-songwriter Joyce Martens is in a loving marriage, has two children, is a part-time social worker, and is also pursuing her passion for music. One of the artists who found inspiration during the pandemic, Martens uses her honest lyricism and enchanting melodies to connect with listeners on a deeper level. She takes audiences on an intimate journey dealing with daily struggles, overcoming feelings of inadequacy, empowering people to accept themselves and in ‘Perfect’ realise imperfection is what makes us special.

Following her singles ‘You Bring Me Home’ and ‘Today’, ‘Perfect’ is the third offering from this talented songstress. A deeply personal one, the song is a reflection describing her journey of realising a love of music, then getting out there and pursuing it. Martens explains that “…a lot of us hold ourselves back from chasing our dreams waiting for the right moment, waiting to be ready or to be good enough. But the right moment will never come. The time is now! If you really want something you shouldn’t wait but you should go for it…”

Building a reputation for soothing acoustic-inspired melodies, Martens brings her smooth and mellifluous sound to audiences in ‘Perfect’. Yet, just as there is a simplistic starkness to the track, it builds to a kaleidoscopic crash of an almost folk-rock arrangement. Chilled and laidback, the ukelele opens with a soft percussion backing only to have a flush of hard-hitting drums matched by a dynamic guitar enhancing the power, heaviness and boldness of ‘Perfect’. In my opinion, this rush to a higher peak of instruments merely emphasises the power of chasing our dreams.
