Josie Bello – They Lie (2022)
Over the years, it seems to have become acceptable that pubic figures lie to people or lead them to varying conclusions through campaigns of misinformation. Josie Bello is providing a sharp commentary on this with her aptly titled single ‘They Lie’. With her Americana flair, she looks at the greed and lust for power that motivate these people while speaking out against the manipulative tactics they use to retain their positions.
While the single sits firmly in her Americana folk sound, she brings a sprinkling of jazz, Latin, world and gypsy tones to the track. This merger of sound takes the commentary of the track to new levels while really showcasing just what she can do. A single that is sure to keep you hooked from start to finish, she will unleash all the thoughts you might have about people in power.
‘They Lie’ opens with a Latin flair that edges into jazzy gypsy tones through the sultry movement of the low levels. There is a really jazzy touch to the melody that comes through the earthy vibes of the drums. The plucked notes of the guitar adds to the vibes of the music that transport you to a dark jazz club. It is a really fantastic melody that grabs hold of your senses from the first note and won’t let go until the song is done with you. You feel this light urge to sway to the melody while closing your eyes and soaking up the power of the sound. Each instrument adds its voice to the sound while coming together for a stunning cohesive flow. Woven into this fusion of sound is an alt-folk vibe that adds a sonic poetic edge to the commentary of the vocals.
The feeling of the melody is picked up by Bello’s vocals that bring a Parisian jazz vibe to the track. Her performance walks the line between melodic and spoken-word, bringing a poetic edge to the track. At times, it also feels like she is just having a conversation with you over a coffee as you take in the news of another public figure lying. There is a really important critique of the world in the lyrics that may have you looking at society a little differently. Through the lyrics, Bello attacks the use of manipulation by powerful people, before questioning why people are happy to accept this. For all the chilled vibes of the music, there is a very heavy question and commentary that we all need to listen to.
Through the jazzy, alt-folk vibes of ‘They Lie’, Josie Bello offers a commentary and critique of the world while asking a question we all need to think about. The music has a chilled edge to it as it fuses Latin flairs with Parisian jazz. Her vocals walk the line between melodic and spoken word which enhances the power of her lyrics.
