Joshua Woo – Someone’s Star (2023)

From IGGY Magazine to Senocular Media, Clout and Rock Era Magazine (to name but a few publications), singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Woo is described as captivating, impression and an artist who “…puts his whole heart and soul into all of his catchy inventions.” (A&R Factory). In 2021, we reviewed Woo’s single ’10-2-1’ so this is not our first taste of Joshua Woo. Yet, ‘Someone’s Star’ is the most recent and intriguing addition to his discography which I am eager to explore. Come with us as we take a gander at the new single.

While not the first single since his well-received EP Beyond The Glass, ‘Someone’s Star’ is Woo’s first solo release in 2023. Following the collaborative song featuring ortoPilot, ‘Reaction’, the new single is an evolution of Joshua Woo’s sound. Retaining the distinctive electronic synth-pop tones, ‘Someone’s Star’ hints at a synth-driven tone; however, Woo taps into a deeper indie-rock meets alternative rock style. Flying somewhere between Fleet Foxes and The Maine, ‘Someone’s Star’ brings a new era for this talented singer-songwriter.

I’ll admit, while I enjoy Woo’s previous work, this darker, harder sound touches my heart more than Beyond The Glass. Showcasing his vulnerability within a soul-stirring blast of rock, ‘Someone’s Star’ is like taking a swig of tequila followed by a warm hug. Interestingly, while the single beats about with pounding drums, a bold guitar and Woo’s husky vocals, the ending is a simplistic “plink plonk” tinging the track with a signature electronic end.

Penned, performed and produced by Joshua Woo, this high-energy single is electric with an upbeat enthusiasm flowing in a melancholic sonic pool. Woo explains that ‘Someone’s Star’ “is a warning about the perils of being overly ambitious and forgetting what really matters.” It is this poetic lyricism that shows profoundness in the charming rock song.
