Joshua Paparo – Miss Electric (2021)

With ‘Marie’, Joshua Paparo delved into one-sided longing in a fleeting relationship. His new release ‘Miss Electric’ follows on from this with a pure tale of love, loss and finding a way forward. Paparo’s purist folk tendencies shine with this track as he stripped the music to the bones before packing almost too much emotion in.

The stripped-back nature of the single reinforces the adage by Harlan Howard that ‘Country music is three chords and the truth’. While minimal in arrangement, the work of Mathieu Morin and Simon Paparo adds a poignancy to the track through the layering of acoustics and haunting vocal harmonies. If Paparo’s last single had you aching deep in your chest, this single offers you a way to move forward through the emotions.

The gentle acoustic guitar that opens ‘Miss Electric’ is pure folk sensibilities. The easy strum of the melody has you floating on a pastel cloud of sound as the vocals wash over you. Glinting white light twinkles against the softness as the piano notes come into play. While the melody has been stripped back to a minimalistic arrangement, there are layers to it that makes you think of easy days in nature. There is a crispness to the air of the single while the heat of sun-warmed earth filters through the low levels.

The vocals open with a question that slides into deep affection and bright love. Paparo’s vocals have a tenderness that fills your chest with the affection you have for loved ones. As the song progresses, the understanding that it is time to move on comes through. While this could be tinged with sadness, there is something much brighter resting in it as there is an acceptance that moving on is fine. Through his extremely emotive vocals, you ride happy times and the understanding that they build you into someone better.

Joshua Paparo strips back the melodics of ‘Miss Electric’ for a powerful and resonating journey through new love, deep affection and the understanding of moving on. The delicate nature of the minimalistic tones brings a poignancy to the lyrics that wash you with emotion. While he brings the joy of falling in love, he also offers the accepting brightness of knowing you can move on.
