Joshua Martin – Quiero Tenerte Pa Mi (2022)

Drawing on the early stages of his own relationship, Joshua Martin brings to sonic life the questions we all face at the start of a relationship in ‘Quiero Tenerte Pa Mi’. Written for his spouse, the single captures the uncertainty felt when you are unsure how to define the relationship you find yourself in and question where it is going. The tentative emotions of these moments shine through the tenderness of the single, before moving to a heartfelt questioning of where you would be without the other person.

As he draws on his own feelings, the insecurities of the track are wonderfully universal and set to some addictive retro Spanish rock tones. After discovering his songwriting skills at age 10, he has been creating songs ever since. Combining organic instrumentation with electronic tones and stock samples, he layers retro vibes into a modern flow.

There is a bouncing, lively feeling to the opening of ‘Quiero Tenerte Pa Mi’ that instantly gets you into the vibe of the track. While the melody has this great bop to the sound that makes you move to the rhythm, there is a sense of untold depths. Through the melody, you feel the first touches of uncertain emotions that can easily spill into a depth of affection. You can hear the influence of Spanish rock in the melody through the shuffle of beats and the overall upbeat vibe. There is no way you can stay still as you listen to this track and you will find your body bopping away.

While the melody definitely gets you hooked to the sound of the track, it is Martin’s vocals that cement its place in your heart. Through the opening verse, you can hear the tentative emotions of the start of a relationship. This creeps through his performance as you are led to the chorus that has a lighter feeling. As you hit the chorus, you are filled with the potential of the relationship and the feeling that you are falling deeper for them. While the lyrics are in Spanish, the expressiveness of his performance allows the meaning of the single to really shine. The catchiness of the chorus is rather undeniable and you might find yourself singing along, whether you speak Spanish or not. The female vocals that mist over the melody later in the track add a wonderful texture and secondary edge to the track.

Joshua Martin has you bouncing to his music while tapping into the uncertainty that fills the early stages of a relationship in ‘Quiero Tenerte Pa Mi’. From the first note, the music has you bopping to its rhythm as it fills the soundscape with a rather upbeat vibe. The vocals bring some of the uncertainty of the track, before diving into the catchy chorus that shines with the knowledge of new depths of emotion.
