JOSHUA – Love Me (2023)
Art teacher turned singer-songwriter, Australia-based JOSHUA has the left-brained creativity to capture the core of music, visual imagery and creative aesthetic. A creative powerhouse, JOSHUA combines his songwriting talent with production, photography, melodies, and pretty much everything else that comes with being a DIY artist (for what he does is artistry). This is my introduction to JOSHUA, but he has received praise and garnered a following on an international scale. From native Australia to the UK, the USA and Germany, JOSHUA ensnares your senses with his intriguing style.
From his debut single ‘Circles’ in 2019 to 2021’s EP Albany and 2023’s ‘Switch’, JOSHUA has shown both versatility and consistency in his sound. A strong electropop rhythm travels through the years from commercial electropop ‘You Make Me Want To Break Things’ to heavier, sharper, brash beats in ‘Elastic’. Following his critically acclaimed single ‘Punchline’, which brought a slight 90s pop sound, JOSHUA released his new track ‘Love Me’.
Focusing on the duality of existence, I find it interesting that JOSHUA showcases diversity but with a common thread in his music. Reminiscent of artists like Charlie Puth and Adam Rickitt with a kick of pop-rock ala All Time Low, ‘Love Me’ brings a grittier rock edge to a pop-driven tone.
A love song at its core, ‘Love Me’ explores the push-and-pull of blissful romance and obsessive toxicity. Bold beats pulsate throughout the melody like a pounding heartbeat, while the twinkling synths flutter about like the all-consuming joy of first love. For me, however, JOSHUA’s vocals bring a wow factor. Rich and warm, you fall into his arms as he pulls you closer. Yet, the vulnerable desperation lingering beneath makes the embrace intense and slightly overwhelming. Here you can submit to the breath-taking intensity or shove away in fear of being too engulfed. He explains:
“’Love Me’ is a track that asks if someone is prepared to love me. When I love, I love hard, so they need to know that before they jump in….”
In addition to the single, JOSHUA released an official lyric video for ‘Love Me’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is strongly recommended.
