Joshua Grant – Someone New (2024)

Refusing to be considered pedestrian or “samesy” in a constantly evolving pop-rock world, singer-songwriter Joshua Grant stands tall as a beacon in the mishmash. If you are a fan of Bring Me The Horizon and Fall Out Boy, the chances are highly likely you’ll enjoy Grant’s sound – then again, his eclectic twirl of alternative rock, pop-rock and pop-punk turn heads across the board. From his 2019 single ‘Transparent’ to 2020’s ‘Edinburgh’ and 2024’s ‘Tidal Wave’, the award-winning Scottish artist has received critical acclaim far beyond his UK borders. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Someone New’.

Following his well-received EP, Do Not Push This Button!, ‘Someone New’ is a high-voltage, head-whipping rush of powerful pop-punk music. I might compare the track to early 2000s Fall Out Boy meets Sum 41 in its strong pop-punk tone; however, Grant flecks ‘Someone New’ with heavier crashes of alternative rock wrapping different flavours of rock in a shimmering sonic package.

Recorded in Liverpool with Al Groves, Grant combines pounding drums with a bold bass and scorching guitar, all coming together with harmonic ferocity. Rage, angst, turmoil and tragedy ooze from the “spin about and lose yourself” tune, so listening to ‘Someone New’ allows listeners to experience the raw emotion belying the melody. With his rough vocals and meaningful lyricism, Grant delves into the complexity of broken relationships. He explains:

“’Someone New’ is a hard look at self-destruction after a breakup. It’s about late nights, bad decisions, and the harsh reality of watching an ex move on. We aimed for raw emotion and a driving beat, and I think we nailed it.”

Confident and forceful but sensitive and vulnerable, Grant explores the depth of loss in ‘Someone New’, while simultaneously peeking at the empowerment of self-reflection. One of the more memorable artists to cross my ears this year, Joshua Grant stands out amidst the rabble and will not be forgotten any time soon.
