Josh Tepper – Poison Apple (2023)

If Miley Cyrus were to have a child with Ed Sheeran, the chances are the kid would be Josh Tepper. Hailing from New York City, singer-songwriter Tepper showed a passion for the arts from the get-go attending LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, followed by studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in cinema studies. This is my introduction to Josh Tepper; however, he has been turning heads among independent press since his debut single ‘Built Me’ in 2022. With coverage from Karl Is My Unkle, FV Music Blog, Plastic Magazine, Music For All, Sinusoidal Music, Eat This Rock, Rising Artists Blog, and Starry Mag (to name a few), Tepper is reaching audiences on an international scale. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Poison Apple’.

Following the duet version of ‘Built Me’, Josh Tepper blasts into 2023 with ‘Poison Apple’. Despite having a contemporary electropop vibe with commercial pop tones, Tepper’s new song shows a strong leaning toward 1980s synth-pop. With nostalgic flair, the melody takes us back to pop of yesteryear in a soothing, flowing arrangement. Yet, as I mentioned, the commercial pop vibes add a modern-day edginess that is purely Tepper. For me, however, it is not the melody that captures my heart but Tepper’s astounding vocal range. From tenor to countertenor, Tepper’s rich tones inject warmth and tenderness into ‘Poison Apple’.

The melody of ‘Poison Apple’ has diversity, versatility and an intricate arrangement to keep anyone entertained, but it is the profound lyricism that showcases Tepper’s depth. A song against toxicity, Tepper explains that ‘Poison Apple’ “comes from my experience of being in a toxic environment…the song is about leaving the toxicity and learning that sometimes the most shiny things can come with negative aspects…’Poison Apple’ is the anthem for taking back your freedom, leaving the negative and staying strong…I hope this song inspires people to stand up for themselves.”
