Jordan Popky – Comfort In Strangers (2024)

While US-based musician Jordan Popky currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, her musical roots remain firmly in her native Philadelphia’s folk scene. Often described as “indie alternative”, the singer-songwriter leans toward a rock-tinged form of indie-pop; however, her vivid narrative and graceful storytelling are as intimate as Joni Mitchell or Lizzy McAlpine. Popky made her debut with the 2021 single ‘The Nest’ (at least according to Spotify), and she quickly established herself as an intriguing young artist. With various collaborations on 2022 singles ‘Good Grief’, ‘Ego To Feed’ and ‘Untitled Drug Song’, she connected with industry professionals, and in 2023 she released a break-through debut EP, Sweet Degenerate. Today, we take a gander at her most recent single, ‘Comfort In Strangers’.

Following her well-received single ‘Hair Care’, ‘Comfort In Strangers’ is Popky’s second release in 2024. Joined by Lorah, Paolo Bennet and Trophy Wife, ‘Comfort In Strangers’ takes a further step toward an indie-pop style as compared to Popky’s previous material. Yet, the hint of folk slips into the melody with profound lyricism and Popky’s obscure vocals. Backed by Lorah, Paolo Bennet and Trophy Wife with whispered lilts of haunting voices, you feel content, moved and seemingly held in a warm embrace.

While the guitars, drums, keyboard and even horns are bold, there is no contrary collision or demand for dominance. No, instead the arrangement is a harmonic inspiration elegantly joined in a luxurious tapestry of smile-inducing joviality. Listening to Popky’s new single is like sitting alongside your best friend with a box of chocolates, loads of laughter and sharing secrets in a confidential whisper… I mean, everyone knew what the secret was, but it was an intimate exchange between two confidantes.

Penned with Adam Tilzer, ‘Comfort In Strangers’ is what it says on the tin, finding fuzziness in unexpected meetings. Popky explains that the single is “a fleeting love song to a chance meeting” – the perfect topic for a girly giggle and longing looks. Confident and bold, Popky’s voice has richness; yet profoundness lies in the moving lyricism delicately unpicking vulnerability in soul-stirring moments.
