Jordan Jones – Sabotage (2023)

Tossing himself and his experiences into his music, singer-songwriter Jordan Jones is inspired by human life in totality. From addictions and depression to living in a van and residing in various parts of North America and Mexico, Jones has, in his words, “…spent a life following my heart and gut feeling.” Now, some people steer clear from gut feelings preferring to tread according to societal norms; however, this is not Jordan Jones. He wants to love, live, laugh, and have his cup overflow never leaving an inch for regret – and he tells us all about it in his music.

Following his single ‘Flawless’, the Canadian artist moves from a description of his ideal day to a more profound reflection of his existence in ‘Sabotage’. When speaking about ‘Sabotage’ Jones explained that “I dig talking about real shit paired with something that sounds good…that’s what this song is, an open conversation with myself about the walls I’ve built and the stories I tell myself to protect myself”. Interestingly enough, while ‘Sabotage’ appears to swirl about inner turmoil and conflict in its poignant melting pot, there is a sense of hopefulness in the track. Jones further explains that the song “…is about breaking myself down so I can rebuild a better, cleaner version of myself”.

As with his previous songs ‘Flawless’ and ‘Stumble’, Jordan Jones leans toward commercial pop sounds in ‘Sabotage’. Influenced by acts like Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran, there is an upbeat tone to the soothing sound. What I find intriguing about ‘Sabotage’ is how Jones’ dulcet tones elegantly counter a brash trip-hop beat showing sensitivity in a rough exterior. Sophisticated and insatiable, Jordan Jones once again brings a smile to people’s faces with poetic confidence.
