Jonny Westwood – Together Forever (2023)
Using his natural storytelling skills, Australian singer-songwriter Jonny Westwood delicately weaves eloquent lyricism with moving instruments in his charming melodies. This is my introduction to Jonny Westwood, but he has been turning heads in the music industry for a few years. Described as having emotive vocals and simple songwriting with effective lyrics, Westwood reaches audiences from the UK and Australia to Germany and the USA.
Creating what he describes as “sad boy pop”, Westwood captures the heartfelt emotions, brutal vulnerability, and aching angst in his toe-tapping tunes. The latest single ‘Together Forever’ is his first self-produced single in 2023, as well as a track off his upcoming EP. In 2021, Westwood flew to Florida to produce his debut album NEGATIVES with Aaron Marsh from Copeland; however, he taps into self-production with the new track. It might allow for the change in ruggedness and raw fragility of the melody, then again this can be an evolution in Westwood’s sound.
While ‘Together Forever’ has a toe-tapping lilt toward pop, I feel a heavier alternative rock element easily aligned with Copeland and Creed. It is as if a layer of dark cloth drapes around you holding you tight as you claw for a breath of air. Yet, while the cloth clings to your body, Westwood’s airy vocals peep through like a shining light giving you a sense of hopefulness. Soft pianos meld with hard-hitting drums lost in a labyrinth of haunting sounds.

As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Jonny Westwood, so I was unaware of what to expect. Dark, gloomy, and painful, Westwood unravels the complexity of intricate human emotion in an intensely intimate way. The brilliant thing is that a constant sense of optimism exists in his music, and I cannot wait for more! Definitely one to keep your eye on.
