Jonathan Lobo – Magic (2022)

Singing songs about life, love and other commonalities, Jonathan Lobo has an intimate intensity in his music. Based in Dubai, this singer-songwriter is relatively new streaming singles for the past year alone; however, despite having only four singles to his name Lobo is gaining a reputation for intoxicating material. Featured on Sinusoidal Music, YMX, PopFad Blog and Roadie Music, Lobo is reaching audiences on an international level. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Magic’.

Described as “catchy and mesmerising” by notable blog YMX, Jonathan Lobo has you tapping your toe to his music from the outset. Hot on the heels of the track ‘Start Again’, ‘Magic’ adopts a folk-tinged pop sound. Compared to the previous ‘Start Again’ that has a softer, smoother style, ‘Magic’ is upbeat and fun. Lying somewhere between Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes, there is a sonic joviality in this song; however, it is the alignment of melody and lyrical content that makes me grin.

Written in 2021, ‘Magic’ is a tribute to “someone that brought excitement, purpose and inspiration into my life.” An expert storyteller, Lobo uses his personal narrative to create an intimate bubble of relatable joy. Exploring the brightness of being in love, the head-bopping happiness fills your soul with its kaleidoscopic cheer. Yet, while there is a light-hearted joviality in the track, there is a more profound aspect to ‘Magic’. Lobo explains that she would say “5 more minutes of magic” all the time; however, as time passed the context of the words changed with the relationship.

Exploring the bright and dark side of relationships, ‘Magic’ is an insightful exposition of human fragility. As Lobo says “…the impact and magic of those words will always remain” despite the change (and ending) of the relationship.
