Jonathan Lobo – Love (2022)

Already having caught our attention in June, Jonathan Lobo is potentially one of the more interesting artists to hit our virtual desks. Writing songs about life in its entirety, Dubai-based Lobo connects with audiences on a more profound level. Featured on PopFad Blog, Roadie Music, Sinusoidal Music, Indie Music Center, YMX and numerous other blogs, this talented singer-songwriter is connecting with people across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is his debut EP Love.

Following his well-received single ‘Love’, Jonathan Lobo releases a five-track EP of the same name. Produced with Aman Sheriff, Love features sonic representations of different life experiences ranging from ending relationships to new romances. Opening with ‘The Cost’, Lobo introduces us to his synth-driven sound – a style that is truly intoxicating. Soft, smooth and charming, there is a relaxing vibe to ‘The Cost’ with steady synths throughout. The interesting thing is that while the melody is simplistic and smooth, the theme of the track is contrary. With a tinge of melancholy, Lobo explores the “battle we all face between chasing more and losing ourselves in the process.”

Retaining the sense of melancholy, Lobo moves to the track ‘Calm Before The Storm’. More of a synth-inspired ballad, there is a haunting ambience to this love song. I’m not comparing Lobo to James Blunt or John Mayer, but Lobo’s look at ending relationships is as chilling as their songs. Of course, Lobo is not all doom and gloom as we see in the remaining tracks.

‘Start Again’ and ‘Magic’ touch on the enjoyment of life and people bringing excitement to our worlds, not necessarily sadness. ‘Start Again’ captures your heart with the interspersed piano throughout the melody – sort of a sonic representation of Lobo’s tenderness. As the track progresses, there is an upbeat movement, and you could easily find yourself grinning by the end.

The final track ‘Love’ is potentially the most intimate and personal for Lobo. He explains that the title track “is about and is dedicated to my grandfather and dog. I learnt about love through both of them. This song is an ode to that love that is unconditional.”

What I enjoy about Jonathan Lobo is the calming quality of his music, as well as his versatility. It doesn’t matter if you’re listening to the bouncy ‘Magic’ or tragic ‘The Cost’, his dulcet tones send chills down your back leaving goosebumps on your arms.
