Jonas Geertsen – Memories of the Past (2024)

Inspired by life in all its grit and glory, musician Jonas Geertsen pours his experience, opinions, thoughts and raw emotion into his moving melodies. Weaving tales of tragic despair and empowering hope, the Danish artist might have only two singles beneath his belt (or at least on Spotify) but he resonates with audiences like an old friend instead of a new acquaintance. This is our introduction to Geertsen and his band, so join us as we take a deep breath and dive into his single ‘Memories of the Past’.

On the heels of his debut track ‘Enchanted’, ‘Memories of the Past’ finds a balance between reggae, folk and pop in the melody and then blurs it. Produced with Noah Rosanes, there is a bold combination of Geertsen’s guitar, Sofus Jul Möglich Rasmussen’s bass, Tobias Haskov Sørensen’s drums and Jan Heise Jørgensen’s piano interspersed throughout with percussion streaming alongside. Hailing from South Africa, ‘Memories of the Past’ has a nostalgic feel of pop melded with marabi jazz, and Katrin Rygaard Pedersen’s rich vocals give it that kick reminiscent of South African group Mango Groove.

As with the rest of the songs from Geertsen’s upcoming EP, Enchanted, ‘Memories of the Past’ revolves around themes of love, despair and hope. In this sophomore single, they speak of “finding that special person who you just can’t let go of; the person you want to care for and love with all your heart for the rest of your life…” Not a lustful song but a raw expression of pure love, Geertsen found the anthem for true love in all its beautiful glory.

Smooth, laidback and oozing a breezy warmth, ‘Memories of the Past’ is the song that makes the day seem better from beginning to end. Perfect for the drive home on Fridays, as it is ideal for the weekend braai with friends, the track has a scintillating sincerity seeping into your soul and running through your veins.
