Jon & Abbie – Marmalade (2020)

Memories of a relationship are like snapshots of time. These snapshots have been taken and woven into ‘Marmalade’ by Jon & Abbie. The single draws a collection of moments throughout a relationship for a retrospective look at being in love and then falling out of love. The second single off their upcoming Still Life EP, the track is a time capsule of emotion.

While Jon Sandman and Abbie Loosemore are better known for their rock tones in bands Pylon Heights and Maud respectively, they are moving away from this for the single. Drawing on a more folk soundscape, the pair consider love, loss and being alone.

‘Marmalade’ introduces you to Sandman’s smooth vocals from the first moment. His voice is a soft touch on your ears and packed full of folk goodness. The lightness of his vocals easily draws you into the lyrics and the snapshots of happiness. The flow of his performance has your head swaying to the vibe he creates. There is a hushed feeling to his vocals that enhances the reflective vibe of the single. There is a dip in his vocals and the melody that helps create the feeling of individual snapshots within the soundscape.

Below his vocals is an equally light melody full of acoustic guitar lines. There is a vulnerable feeling to the melody as you twirl around the soundscape. Within this vulnerability is a sonic sepia haze that adds to the retrospective vibe of the music. With the vocals, the melody dips to nothing between the lyrical snapshots for a wonderful look back in time.

Jon & Abbie create sonic snapshots of a relationship as they look back on being in love and falling out of it in ‘Marmalade’. The acoustic melody creates a hazy memory fog that dips for the lyrical snapshots. Sandman’s vocals are easy to fall into as they cause you to drift into the retrospective vibes of the song.
